Buller's birds still charm
Walter Buller is known as New Zealand's leading 19th century ornithologist but by today's standards he would be regarded as a major threat to native birds.
Walter Bullerr is known as New Zealand's leading 19th century ornithologist. Although he pursued a successful legal career, it is for his research and publications regarding New Zealand's birds that he became renowned, eventually receiving a knighthood from Queen Victoria for his work.
Buller was an avid collector of specimens, and amassed large numbers of native species which today are rare or even extinct. More on stuff.co.nz
