The lagoon is one of the feeding grounds for the white heron (kotuku) and royal spoonbill, both of which breed in the nearby Waitangiroto Nature Reserve.  It also has a diverse and fascinating flora, both in the salt marsh, and other wetland communities of the lagoon, as well as in the adjacent shrub lands, forest and sand dunes.

THE TOUR

Kayaking is a great way to enjoy the flora, fauna and scenic grandeur of Okarito Lagoon.

Okarito Nature Tours offer freedom rental kayaking and guided kayaking trips on Okarito Lagoon.  Previous experience is not necessary. We are a small family run business that has operated since 1992.

All Okarito Nature Tour kayak trips start with a full briefing of kayaking routes and options, tide and weather conditions, bird watching and kayaking safety. Allow 45 minutes prior to getting on the water to ensure enough time for the briefing.

Freedom rental has several options from a two-hour rental - perfect for beginners, families or those short of time, to a half-day rental for those wishing to explore a bit, to a full-day rental.

Overnight kayak rental is ideal for those who want to get away from it all.  Bring your own camping gear and fully explore the lagoon.

Guided kayak trips mean we can show you some of our favourite spots. This option is great for those who might be a little less confident or want more information on the flora, fauna or local history. We provide buoyancy aids, spray skirts, dry bags, insect repellent, map and bird guide, and have a rescue boat on standby at all times.
