About Whataroa
Welcome to Whataroa, a peaceful and rejuvenating retreat for travellers, a true West Coast town that still retains its genuine local character. Just 25 minutes drive north of Franz Josef Glacier, or 1 hour south of Hokitika, this predominantly farming community is also the gateway to the Westland Tai Poutini National Park - a landscape that has been recognized with World Heritage status.
The name Whataroa translates from Maori as a "tall foodstore platform". In the 1800's and early 1900's flax and gold were the dominant sources of income. Today, discerning visitors to the region are increasingly coming to appreciate Whataroa's ideal location and unspoiled atmosphere as a place to base themselves while they explore areas such as the Glaciers, Okarito, Gillespies Beach and Hari Hari.
There is a good variety of accommodation including the local hotel, motels, B&B's as well as a past maternity hospital which has been converted to studio units. Dine in or out at the local pub or tearooms and enjoy a browse through one of New Zealand's most renowned Maori art galleries - the Kotuku Art Gallery. Visit here with Kereama Armstrong, known as Lou,
Situated between the upper Waitangi Taona River and the upper Whataroa River, Whataroa offers magnificent brown trout fishing and directions are easily obtained from the locals. The climate can be quite moist with and annual rainfall of 5 metres, although most of this is nearer the hills and there are lovely warm sunny days in town and as you head out towards the sea. Winter months can offer up some heavy frosts and icy roads, but snow very rarely falls on the ground.
The Great White Heron, Kotuku, is a rare find in New Zealand and regarded as a national treasure. Whataroa is the base for the world renowned trips to the White Heron Sanctuary in the Waitangi Roto Reverve. This is the only place in New Zealand that these beautiful birds nest along with the Royal Spoonbill and the little shag. Tours can be taken into this area year round but to view the White Heron, Royal Spoonbill and the little Shag one needs to take the tour from September to March. The only access to the breeding colony is from Whataroa, there is no access from Okarito.
Experience Whataroa, your gateway to Tai Poutini National Park, and treasures of birds, art, history and true West Coast character.
